Taylor Swift has announced that ‘Cruel Summer’ will be her upcoming single.
The 33-year-old artist originally planned to launch the song, which appeared on her ‘Lover’ album in 2019, during the summer of 2020. However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, her release schedule was altered. After noticing a surge in the song’s popularity on streaming platforms, the singer of hits like ‘Shake It Off’ has now officially confirmed its release.
During her ‘Eras’ concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday night (17.06.23), Taylor shared, “So essentially, ‘Cruel Summer’ was part of the ‘Lover’ album, an album released four years ago.
“And I have to tell you something. ‘Cruel Summer’ was my personal favorite song on that album. It was the one I loved the most. And as you know, before an album comes out, there are discussions, and everyone provides input on what should be the singles. I was just about to have my favorite song, ‘Cruel Summer,’ become the single from ‘Lover’… and while I’m not blaming the pandemic, it did hinder ‘Cruel Summer’ from becoming a single.”
Taylor also expressed her gratitude to her fans for consistently playing her “favorite” track.
She said, “What’s happening now, all thanks to you, and in all honesty, nobody quite understands how it’s happening, but you all have been streaming ‘Cruel Summer’ so much, it’s actually rising on the streaming charts in 2023… and my record label has decided to make it the next single.
“It’s truly a bit mind-boggling to me because nothing quite like this has occurred in my career before. So, a big thank you to everyone who has been listening to that song about 500 times a day because it’s my personal favorite.”
