JoJo Siwa is facing criticism for her “awkward” interview.
After stating that she had invented a new music genre, fans expressed their disapproval of the Karma singer’s remarks.
In an interview with Billboard, the 20-year-old artist mentioned, “When I first signed with Columbia, I mentioned I wanted to introduce a novel music genre.”
“They questioned, ‘What do you mean?’, and I replied, ‘It’s called ‘gay pop’. It’s like K-pop but with a gay twist’.”
However, many fans were quick to point out that such a genre already existed long before her statement.
“That’s been around for way longer than she has been alive,” one critical commentator posted on X/Twitter.
Another comment read, “JoJo Siwa’s statement about launching a new music genre called ‘gay pop’ is incredibly ignorant, disrespectful, and dismissive of all queer individuals in the music industry who paved the way before her.”
Several others expressed embarrassment for the pop sensation.
“She’s undoubtedly leading the awkwardness competition,” commented one individual.
Additional snippets from JoJo’s interview were scrutinized by online users, especially her assertion of having a “vision”.
JoJo affirmed, “I have a vision, I’ve always had it.”
“I know what I want to become. I know where I want to head. I understand the standard, the craziness. I know how I want to shape the world’s perceptions.”
Some critics implied that JoJo’s early fame might have influenced her statements.
“This is the outcome of continuously praising a child and not providing constructive feedback; you end up with this,” one individual commented.
Another commenter remarked, “The boldness of that girl is truly remarkable.”
